What is the highest number of breedings anyone has ever heard of from a single collection from a dog for frozen semen storage, from any breed of dog? Is 27 off the charts?

It would depend on how many sperm are used in each ":breeding". We use 200 million in our breedings and the most I have gotten from Icco in one collection is 11 breedings, with the average I have seen with all the dogs I have collected, about 6-7 breedings. 27 is ridiculous, but i know some countries use only 50 million per breeding, so it is hard to say.

I agree with Scott!

It would take a dog with rather "large testes" to do 27 breedings out of a single collection!

The 27 could be referring to the number of straws/units and not the number of breedings.

Actually, Testes size and sperm count are correlated. They measure the testes of bulls for this reason. So, I guess it might be possible with some of the larger breeds such as Mastiffs or Saint Bernards.

JMHO,
Steve

This was with ICSB right here in CA so it's pretty standardized. I'll ask them what the count was per vial. They said the numbers. It sounded like something Carl Sagan would say. These were vials, individual breedings, and the testes are average, not large. The most I've ever heard of from a Rott is 18 vials from one collection. It thawed at 85%.

Ive had up to 10 per collection with Benno at Dr. Hutchison's in Ohio. The team told me they had a Cane Corso with 24 straws collected........ that was the most I had ever heard of so wow to 27!

ICSB sent a semen analysis form and I've never seen one quite like this with this much detail.

Total volume: 14.7 ml.
Color: White
Viscosity: 1 (range is between 1 and 4)
Percent Motility: 98%
Progressive Motility: 5 (range is between 0 and 5)
Sperm Count/ml: 393 Mil per ml.
Total count: 5.777 Billion
Total Normal Sperm Cells: 5.488 Billion
Total Abnormal: 5%
Abnormalities seen: 1% bent tails, 2% coiled tails, 2% detached heads
Other: 6% immature
Testes size and tone: Normal
Total of 27 breedings collected.

If I did my math right, if you take the normal cells which is 5.488 billion and divide them by 27 breedings that means the semen count per vial is 203 million.
ICSB charges $295 for a new account for collection and freezing up to 4 vials and $50 per each vial over the first four. If the sperm count didn't provide enough of a shock, the bill certainly would.

Very good collection. We usually put 200 miliion per breeding so that would be right on for 27 breedings. That is a substantial bill so I hope you can use this stud a lot or there is a demand for his semen so you can sale some vials. I store locally at a bank that charges $63 a year per dog regardless of how many straws he has in storage.

Cheri,

You didn't say what breed this dog was. What breed? Was the dog a rottweiler?

Steve

It's a Rottweiler but I can't mention the name because this is not an ad for the dog, it's a discussion on collecting semen.

I was told that if you collect when you have a female in heat present you will get the best collection and that if you collect without the female present sometimes the semen is no good at all for use. Is this true?

It's not that the semen isn't any good, the problem is that sometimes some dogs won't give much, or any, unless a female is in heat standing in front of them. On the other hand, some dogs will give a great collection with no female present. That issue all depends on the individual dog and how he feels about getting collected.

I'm afraid that this prostate problem will come back so is there any info on this subject that you could share please??

I moved this prostate issue over to another thread because the prostate is such a complicated and complex issue for discussion. Comments about prostate problems should be posted to the new thread.
