Would anyone like to suggest anything for yard cleaning to help with dog smells ? We pick up the piles as soon as they go when inside a kennel run and just about daily in the yard and never have a problem with those smells but the urine isn't something we have figured out. Now that we are getting days in the 80's it is going to start to smell. If there is something that really works how do you apply it ? Where are you buying it ?

Thanks in advance for any info you may want to share :)

I sprinkle powdered lime in my dog pen, it has chips in it, and that takes care of the smell. I bought the lime at Home Depo and I don't think that it was very expense at all. Best of luck.

I would think Lyme would potentially burn their paws, and how about if they ingest it? Personally I use food grade diatomaceous earth. Bonus, not only does it work on smells but also kills things like fleas and parasites. I bought a 50 lb bag three years ago and still have some. You don't have to use it every month as it lasts a long time.

Audrey,

Where do you get food grade diatematious earth? Like a Lowe's or Home Depot? How do you put it down, with a spreader or do you just pour it on the urine spots in the yard? Will it kill grass?

I have heard of DE for fleas, but I did not know it was also used for deoderizing, too. I usually bleach my dog yard, but it would be good to have the bug killing aspect, too.

Thanks for the info.

Mia

There is this green liquid stuff you get at petsmart that you hook up to your hose and spray over the yard that works really well. I'm also a bleach freak, so I clean everything with bleach also.

K.O.E. (Kennel Odor Eliminator) is non-toxic and gets rid of odors really well. I put in a sprayer attached to the hose and spray down the gravel part of the patio area weekly or when I notice an odor.

I've used both TRAIL Deodorizer (got it through PetEdge.com, $22 for a gallon, mix 4 ounces with a gallon of water ) as well as Odo-Ban from Home Depot ($12 for a gallon, dilute about 10 ounces in gallon of water available in either Eucalyptus or Lavender scent) - both work well but I think the KOE worked the best.

I've also used bleach but I hate the smell!

Lime severely dries out anything it touches, including your hands or your dog's feet. Lime is used to bury and hide dead bodies because it kills the smell and it shrinks tissue like a mummy effect so you can imagine how this will dry out your dog's skin. Lime is severely irritating if it gets in eyes and should not be ingested either. Lime is okay to sprinkle around the outside of a kennel to kill the urine run-off if you don't have a septic, but you should never put lime where your dogs can touch it.

Read this: http://www.sciencestuff.com/msds/C1450.html
It says:
May cause severe eye damage and severe burns to the skin. Causes gastrointestinal tract burns, severe pain, nausea, vomiting. May cause circulatory system failure. May cause coughing and difficulty in breathing. May cause chemical bronchitis. Conditions aggravated/target organs: Persons with pre-existing eye, skin, or respiratory conditions are more susceptible.

KOE works really well but I hate the smell of the product itself

Bleach should not be used because when bleach combines with urine it makes a toxic gas, especially if used in enclosed spaces. I know several people who killed off their litters of pups by accident using bleach

Trail works fairly well, better when combined with it's companion product Quatricide PV

Lime does work BUT should only be used a couple times a year, hosed into the dirt and allowed to totally dry before the dogs touch it again.

Baking soda, Odor Mute, apple cider vinegar and Dr Bronner's peppermint soap work ok but not great

The green liquid at petco is probably the Yard odor Killer product. Works fair but also smells funny

The stuff i like the best and works the best FOR US has been the Odoban Yard Control spray. Smells a little like cut grass. BUT I have been totally unable to find any this year at all :(

Right now we are using Dr Bronner's mixed into a hose sprayer about 2 oz to 32 oz water but it's not my first choice. Bugs are not fond of it though

I use Odoban daily and about once a week I hit the entire area with bleach. I've noticed bleach seems to burn the dogs feet so we only bleach when the dogs are crated and then let their runs completely dry before putting them out. .

I was told that Lowe's or Home Depot has DE. Just make sure you buy food grade. I normally order from
http://wolfcreekranch1.tripod.com/defaq.html
only because when I run out it is out of season for retail.

If you dig out, place gypsum down and cover it, this really works great. Also make sure you don't have too much foliage (trees) forming an umbrella effect to contain the odors. Sunlight is the best thing for killing odor and germs...

Unfortunately, Clean Control no longer makes this product. Here is the disappointing response I got when I wrote the company after I, too, could not find it locally:
Quote:
We no longer make the Yard Control product, and have no inventory left. I am sorry, but we do not make a comparable product at this time.

My wife called around today and couldn't find the DE stuff but she did get a internet site to order from. She asked for food grade and nobody had it. I'm thinking that you spray this stuff on the ground but people were telling her to give it to the dogs in their food. Is that correct ?

Thanks for the help :)

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!
Andy you do not give it to the dog to eat! It is used as a filtration media for swimming pools and looks and feels a lot like talc powder. If you were to use this for odor control you would spread it on the ground. The edges are so sharp that they cut fleas and they die, that is how it controls flea infestation. It is very safe for you to handle but it will cut small insects like fleas, at least that is what I have read :?: I have never heard of food grade and not sure how or where it could be used in the food service industry :?: :?:

Our Lowe's has a 'natural' lawn/garden product section and they do have DE. Most of your organic gardening supply stores carry it. Some will have the food grade. Fresh Start Growers Supply in Louisville, KY has food grade DE for $26.00 for 40lbs. Health food stores will have food grade DE. You sprinkle it on the ground. It is a powder, not a liquid. A flour sifter doesn't work too bad. The food grade can be eaten by humans, dogs, horses, etc. The DE used in swimming pool filters has been processed differently and shouldn't be applied to lawns, etc and definitely should not be eaten.

Audrey,
Does it have to be the food grade to use on the lawn? Is there an advantage of using it over the other DE?

Thank you,
Cindy

The stuff used in pools has been chemically treated. I am just very very careful what I use around the dogs. That is why I use food grade. Also is the reason why I have a beautiful manicured front yard, but in back, where the dogs are, we have God's gift of beautiful natural weeds and other greenery I have not yet identified.
